Throughout its history of providing health care to the community through the Sisters of Mercy, the Mater has always relied on the generosity and efforts of all its supporters.
This tradition of giving began in 1906, when a friend of the Sisters purchased the original hospital, and with the support and fundraising activities of the community, a larger public hospital was opened in 1914. As the Mater flourished over the years, the tremendous support and fundraising continued, resulting in the purchase of new land behind the original site. Even when faced with the withdrawal of funding by the state government and the eventual closure of the public hospital in 1982, the supporters of Mater persevered, and the new private hospital opened its doors in 1991. Now receiving no government funding, the outstanding medical facilities and uniquely compassionate atmosphere of the Mater are a testament to all those associated with the hospital. By dedicating their time, effort and financial assistance, the Mater is able to continue its proud tradition of giving the very best in health care and spiritual support to those in need.
