| The Mater Hospital was founded and sponsored by the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy, North Sydney. Catherine McAuley, who devoted her life to the service of those in need, founded the Order in Ireland in 1831. She based the order on the values of mercy, hospitality, compassion, respect, justice and excellence.
Today, although the number of Sisters actively working in the hospital is few, the legacy of Catherine McAuley - the spirit of Mercy - is carried on through the creation and delivery of excellent health related services, with an extra dimension of caring. The Mater spirit is also reflected in the way our staff deliver services, with friendliness, hospitality, compassion and care. Receiving no government funding and being a not-for-profit hospital, the Mater continues to provide total health care for the community. The next fundraising event is the St Vincents & Mater Health Sydney Gala Dinner on 16 October 2007. Click here for details. |
